Work on to shortlist sites for Bangabandhu Int’l Airport: PM United News of Bangladesh :: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said work is on to shortlist the sites for state-of-the-art Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport in any of the capital’s surrounding areas.

“On completion of the site survey work for the airport, now the work is going on to make a shortlist of the sites around the capital,” she said replying to a starred tabled question from ruling party MP Golam Dastagir Gazi (Narayanganj-1) during her scheduled question-answer session in Parliament.

The Leader of the House said the government has a plan to set up two new airports -Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport and Khan Jahan Ali Airport in Bagerhat.

She said the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport will be established in any of the surrounding areas of the capital to make it a ‘hub’ of the east and the west for air traffic and ensuring the country’s overall development.
The Prime Minister said the government signed an agreement on September 21, 2016 with a Japanese consultant firm, Nippon Koei Co Ltd, to conduct detailed feasibility study for the project. “The consultant firm started work on October 1 last.”

She said the Khan Jahan Ali Airport is being set up in Bagerhat to establish a speedy air communication with the country’s south and southwestern region, develop trade and commerce as well as tourism industry, increase effectiveness of the Mongla Port alongside increasing effectiveness of the Mongla EPZ and Mongla Economic Zone. “Now work for land acquisition is going on.”

Reiterating her firm and ‘zero tolerance’ policy against corruption, Hasina said one of the main targets of the government is to make its every institution free from corruption.

Listing some of the steps already taken to free Biman Bangladesh Airlines from corruption, she said vigilance has already been increased to ensure transparency and accountability in the operations of the national flag carrier while necessary administrative or departmental steps are being taken against the corrupt officials and employees.

“Overall, the target and plan of the government is to turn Biman Bangladesh Airlines into a corruption-free, modern and service-oriented organisation and establish transparency and accountability into its operations,” she added.
