মানসম্মত শিক্ষা অর্জনে শিশুদের পাঠদক্ষতা এবং পাঠাভ্যাস অপরিহার্যDhaka, 27 February 2017 :: The discussants in a seminar yesterday call for a safer and better learning environment to build reading skills and instill reading habit amongst primary school children.

Unlocking children’s full potential is crucial for advancing the government’s ongoing effort for ‘Quality Primary Education for All’, they told a seminar titled ‘Enhancing Children’s Reading Skills and Reading Habit: Need for Concerted Efforts”, jointly organized by Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) and International NGO Room to Read Bangladesh (RtR-BD) in the Directorate’s Auditorium on the occasion of International Mother Language Day.

Dr. Md. Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, ndc, Director General of DPE was present as the Chief Guest and the Assistant Director General of DPE, Mr. Sultan Mahmud as the Special Guest with Rakhi Sarkar, Country Director of Room to Read Bangladesh as the Chair.

Professor Emeritus, Dr. Manzoor Ahmed in his key note speech presents the need to build a strong foundation in mother language amongst early grade children and urges government to create an enabling learning environment with appropriate reading materials, sufficient teachers’ training, effective reading instructions and well-equipped classroom libraries to develop responsible citizens.

Earlier, the Literacy Director of RtR BD Mohammad Shah Alam presented its research findings of how close collaboration with government has helped improve children’s reading performance. Students at the end of Grade 2 in RtR supported government primary schools can read 51 words per minute which is well above the fluency benchmark and about 55% children can read 45 words or above per minute. 80% children can comprehend enough to answer 3 out of 5 questions correctly.

Dr Mostafa Kamal in his speech reaffirmed the government commitment to meet education sector goals and commended Room to Read’s effective contribution to boost the sector. Finally, Dr Kamal unwrapped the cover of 12 titles, which Room to Read has published in 2016 for early grade children. ‘Bilur Cycle’, ‘Dadur Jonno Valobasha’, ‘Moner Moto Bondhu’, ‘Harano Ball’, ‘Putu o Gutu’, ‘Rimir Lal Boi’, ‘Shahoshi Rima’ are some of the notable titles.

Recalling Room to Read’s slogan ‘World change starts with educated children’, Rakhi Sarkar in her vote of thanks appreciates government support in furthering its mission and vows to continue partnership with government to attain the common vision of quality education and lifelong learning for all.
