Youth Net for Climate Justice, a prominent youth-led organization dedicated to climate advocacy, has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the latest G7 communique issued from Borgo Egnazia, Italy. The organization criticizes the G7 for lacking a clear plan to phase out fossil fuels and ensure a just transition, labeling the communique a missed chance for significant climate action.
Sohanur Rahman, Executive Coordinator of Youth Net for Climate Justice, shared the organization’s concerns: “The G7’s failure to deliver a definitive roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels is a grave disservice to the global community. The climate crisis demands bold and immediate actions, not vague commitments. It is time for these leaders to step up and lead by example.”
This criticism arises as the international community gears up for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. With the conference chaired by a former oil executive, the need for robust leadership from powerful global entities is more pressing than ever.
Youth Net highlighted that the G7’s communique on energy transition fell short by not including specific plans for phasing out fossil fuels, which is crucial for combating climate change. The organization urges the G7 to present clear roadmaps and ambitious actions to achieve a just and equitable clean energy future.
Despite reiterating commitments to transition away from fossil fuels in a “just, orderly, and equitable manner,” the G7 communique allowed for continued coal, oil, and gas use without setting definitive timelines. This lack of ambition is particularly disappointing given the G7’s substantial economic and emissions footprint. There are urgent calls for stringent action to align with the 1.5°C temperature rise limit and net-zero pathways.
Youth Net emphasizes its dedication to holding governments accountable for their climate responsibilities. “We will continue to advocate tirelessly for the phase-out of fossil fuels and the acceleration of renewable energy development,”Sohanur Rahman affirmed. “The G7 must lead by example towards a swift, fair, and well-funded transition away from fossil fuels.”
As the countdown to #COP29 continues and climate impacts intensify globally, the demand for decisive action is louder than ever. Youth Net’s call for concrete roadmaps reflects the growing impatience among climate advocates for substantial commitments and real progress from world leaders.
