In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the escalating climate crisis, 180 youths from Morelganj, a vulnerable coastal region of Bangladesh, have been equipped with essential skills and knowledge to tackle climate challenges. The initiative, titled “Building Agency of Youth in Climate Action ,” was jointly organized by YouthNet Global and ActionAid Bangladesh supported by the British Council.
The training sessions were conducted across six phases from November 12 to December 25, 2024, covering three strategic locations in the region. This ambitious project focused on empowering the youth to combat the adverse effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels, salinity intrusion, and the increasing frequency of cyclones like Sidr, Amphan and Remal.
Prominent trainers, including Md. Arif Siddiqui, Deputy Manager of Partnerships and Programs at ActionAid Bangladesh, and Sidratul Muntaha, an ActionAid inspirer, facilitated the workshops. They engaged participants in critical discussions on climate adaptation, mitigation strategies, sustainable practices, and building resilience at the community level.
A standout outcome of the program was the formulation of social action plans by the youth participants. These plans aim to address pressing local environmental challenges by utilizing community resources effectively. The areas of focus include climate adaptation, water resource management, mitigation, and agroecology, ensuring sustainable solutions tailored to the unique needs of Morelganj. After the training program, participants were awarded certificates recognizing their dedication and enhanced expertise in climate action.
Morelganj faces severe climate-related risks, including frequent cyclones, rising sea levels, and salinity intrusion, which disrupt agriculture and limit access to freshwater. Prolonged waterlogging and monsoon floods further exacerbate the hardships of local communities. The Sundarbans, a critical natural buffer against extreme weather, is also under threat, heightening the region’s vulnerabilities. The collaboration between YouthNet Global, the British Council, and ActionAid Bangladesh underscores the power of youth leadership in fostering climate resilience. Through their active involvement, these young changemakers are paving the way for a sustainable and secure future in one of Bangladesh’s most climate-affected regions.
Speaking on the initiative, Sohanur Rahman, Executive Coordinator of YouthNet Global, highlighted the transformative role of youth in combating climate change.
“The future of our planet hinges on youth engagement. By empowering them with the tools and knowledge to lead, we are fostering a generation that will drive sustainable solutions and build resilience in their communities,” Rahman said.
